Mathew (Hughie) Chernin, a native of Nogales, Arizona, died Saturday, January 24,
2026 in Tucson, Arizona. He was born in Nogales on December 5, 1929 to Harryand Bessie Chernin. Hughie served in the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Ord and then sent to Trieste, Italy.In 1951, he married Suzanna (Suzy) Joffroy Chernin, also a native of Nogales. They had five children. Hughie was a kind, gentle and noble man, and a dedicated husband, father, son brother, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his three daughters, Debbie (Jeff ) Yaeger, Melanie (Steve) Wilcox and Roxanne Lowell, ten grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Suzy and sons Mathew (Norma) and Dee Chernin and his six sisters and one brother.
Hughie was a well respected man and will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He died peacefully at the home of his daughter, Roxanne Lowell, with his three daughters at his side.
Funeral mass is at 2:00pm Thursday February 5, 2026 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nogales, Arizona. Arrangements by Adair's Carroon Mortuary in Nogales.
